Project: "Imperial narratives – imperial interactions: Reordering Empires in Persia, Central Asia, and India in the 18th and early 19th centuries"

The overarching goal of the project is to explore the imperial reordering of the Indo- Persian world in the 18th and early 19th centuries as a result of the crisis of the traditional imperial centers in Persia and India. It pursues the, whether the period around 1800 represented a phase of intensified status politics, due to the renegotiation of the (post-)imperial orders of the Persianate World. Imperial narratives, symbolic interactions, and practices of material exchange traditionally were decisive instruments in the processes of renegotiating imperial relations among the rulers of Asia and as well as in (re-)defining their relations with the emerging European rule in South and Central Asia. The project will therefore focus on imperial narratives and their reconfiguration in court chronicles as well as on status communication in letters, treaties and images in order to assess the relevance and scope of traditional status politics at the end of the global early modernity.
