Project: "Restitutions of cultural heritage"

Richard Legay is a Senior researcher at the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut where he studies the on-going restitutions of cultural heritage. With a focus on the heritage stolen by European powers in Africa during the colonial period, he applies a comparative lens and interrogates how various actors (states, communities, museums, etc.) and levels (national, regional, local, etc.) engage in restitution governance. This project is developed in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. Andreas Mehler. Dr. Legay is also interested in colonial memory, public history, and the impact of new media and the digital era upon these topics.
